Earlier this year, Google announced the Googlebook, a Gemini-powered laptop that marked the end of the Chromebook.
The leak also shows that The upcoming Google Pixel 11 will display the mysterious Pixel Glow lighting effect.
That lightbar in Googlebook seem to serve the same purpose, but details are sparse. However, the Pixel community is busy talking about this mysterious lighting system.
But what if you don’t want to buy a Pixel 11 and think the GoogleBook is a joke? There’s still a great way to get the Pixel Glow experience on any Android phone.
Glowbar is a subtle attempt to capture the excitement surrounding Pixel Glow
Luckily, Google doesn’t own the copyright to the name
The official Pixel Glow feature is built at the hardware level, so older Pixel phones and Chromebooks will never offer it.
While I’m not sure that this feature is worth upgrading, the app is a clever reconstruction at the software level.
We don’t know exactly how Pixel Glow will look and function on the Pixel 11, but Google has given us a good look at the glowbar on the GoogleBook (there doesn’t seem to be an official name for it).
Glowbar has ported the Googlebook glowbar directly to Android. By default, it shows a colorful bar pulsing just below the camera hole.
By default, this bar does nothing except indicate that you are an official glowbar fan (Glowfans? Glowers? Glowfolks?). However, for $1, Glowbar gets real functionality.
Glowbars are a fun way to represent information
Although one optional setting isn’t actually optional
The premium version of Glowbar unlocks a variety of really useful tools.
It can display battery levels, show when notifications arrive, and track downloads and other data transfer actions.
There’s also an option to turn the Glowbar into a ring (for some reason, this option isn’t called Glowring), which feels less intrusive than a bar.
Glowbar has various options to automatically move, resize, and hide the bar, but no matter how often I fiddle with these settings, they always feel annoying.
But since there was already a hole in my Pixel’s screen, adding a glowing ring didn’t make me feel uncomfortable.
I appreciate the developer’s efforts to represent the glowbar accurately at a software level, but the cutout view feels much better suited to an Android phone.

Glowbar is your minimalist launcher friend
Initially, I thought of Glowbar as a fun gimmick.
I don’t need it to show the charge level when my battery indicator is there, and notification alerts are redundant if they are less clear than actual notifications.
But while I was testing Glowbar, I was also testing Comfy Launcher, a minimalist tool that has an option to remove the status bar.
Glowbar neatly steps in to show information I was missing in my status bar. In cutout mode, it’s unobtrusive and doesn’t detract from the launcher’s minimalist design.
This way, it’s easy to see how the official Pixel Glow and glowbar tools will work with their respective devices.
While the Glowbar app is fun, it makes me better understand the need for an official feature.
But sometimes pleasure is as important as benefit
According to the leaked code, Pixel Glow will notify you of important activities when your phone is facing down.
Overall, this sounds like the design philosophy behind Nothing’s Glyph Lights, which is both fun and useful.
Do I think Pixel Glow/glowbar will be a flagship feature of the Pixel 11 and GoogleBook? NO.
But I’ve been enjoying using the Pixel Glow for days now, and I’ve realized that its appeal is more than just usability.
I don’t need Glowbar on my Pixel phone. It’s just another way to convey information that is already easily accessible. But I enjoy using it.
I love features that visually represent action in a fun way.
Notifications are boring, but the flash of the Glowbar adds a splash of color to my day. The progress indicator is made more vivid with a pulsating color bar (or ring).
None of this is necessary. But it’s nothing fun, but I’m still hunting for it.
Glowbar helps me forget about utility hunting ever again
I’ve testified extensively on this site about how practical features are often pushed aside in favor of flashy new features.
I’m always looking for apps that enhance the functionality of my Android phone, and I rarely look for something fun.
Is a dollar too much to pay for Glowbar? Yes (locking every useful tool behind a paywall is incredibly brazen on the part of the developer). Do I regret buying it? NO.
So while I definitely won’t be buying a Pixel 11 when it launches, I now better understand the appeal of the Pixel Glow and glowbar.
Now I just have to wait and see if the broken Magic Cursor tool is fixed at launch.

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.
In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.
The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
