Dr Benedict Nwachukwu recently appeared on ABC News

This story follows Platoon Coach, Kirsten Furguson, a full-time mother of 2 and a professional trainer. He said one day he went out for a long time and ended up having to drag himself home. He decided it was time to see a Hip Orthopedic Specialist to find out if his hip pain was getting worse.

Nwachukwu saw Kirsten and gave her the option of managing her hip pain through PT, or having surgery to repair her torn hip labrum (found on MRI imaging.)

Kirsten chose to repair the labrum. Dr Nwachukwu performed the surgery arthroscopically, using small incisions and a special camera to look inside the hip joint. He was able to secure the labrum back to the bone with suture anchors. Next, Dr. Nwachukwu underwent femoroplasty, a procedure that reshapes the femoral head and eliminates hip impingement (the cause of a torn labrum.) Femoroplasty eliminates hip impingement, which helps with hip preservation and the possibility of tearing.

Kirsten immediately started PT with physical therapist, Snehal Patel, at HSS (Hospital for Special Surgery). He was so determined and worked hard, he decided to run the United Airlines NYC marathon 1/2 2024. Physical Therapy continued, and with the permission of Dr. Nwachukwu and physical therapist, Patel, he decided to run the TCS New York City Marathon.
